the small japanese town arita in saga prefecture is considered the birthplace of japanese porcelain production. it was here in the mountains that kaolin, or china clay, was first discovered in 1616, and today 80% of arita's 22,000 inhabitants still work in small family businesses producing china and ceramics.

arita ceramics, also known as the imperial gift, is renowned worldwide for its delicate yet robust material properties, which come from the high purity of the porcelain clay, the painstaking kneading process, and the long and very hot firing (at about 1300 °c).
